Strength for the Journey January Newsletter

Creating Capacities

The priority of Strength for the Journey is education.  But to receive a sound education, children need more than just schools.  They need the very things that we often take for granted; a family support system, safety, food, and safe water to drink.  Schools need teaching materials and electricity.  Living and helping in the small town of Jamao, Strength for the Journey realizes that we must help our community meet all these needs if we want to create capacities for our children to learn and grow and realize a life free from poverty.

Helping with School Lunches

Arroyo Blanco is a community far off paved roads in the mountains of Jamao.  Because of its distance to the main road, the providers of school lunches will not deliver to the school.  Since children cannot be in school all day without eating,
the director had no choice but to dismiss school for the day at noon.  To help, Strength for the Journey agreed to provide lunches until a solution could be found.

Supporting wholesome activities

Living in a tiny mountain town, people in Jamao have few options for family fun.  No after school activities or sports are available.  As a result, teens, young adults, and sometimes children gather in the park where alcohol, drugs, and other undesirable activities take place.  For 2020, Strength for the Journey has committed to providing one family activity each month.  In January, we hosted a movie night. For teens, we installed lights for the town basketball court.  Now players do not need to stop the game at dark.

Sharing with our Community

The Strength for the Journey Center for Sharing was established in memory of Chris Galvin of Port Clinton, Ohio, who was our guiding force for many years.  The idea of a place where people could come to trade no longer needed items for a "new" pair of shoes, clothing, sheets or towels, food or toys is a concept similar to projects Chris had established.  And when others can give something in order to receive, That is Strength for the Journey!

KUDOS to Port Clinton Rotary!!!

Many thanks to the Port Clinton, Ohio Rotary Club who donated funds for us to purchase the Scholastic Lecturas Cortas reading program.  Thanks to them, Strength for the Journey is now working 3 times a week in 8 campo schools tutoring reading to children who are achieving below grade level. This is one donation that will make a positive difference in many lives.
