SFTJ Kids Start Classes

This was a true group effort, thanks to all of you there in the US, Canada, and even the UK and many here in the DR.  Read on to see what, together, we have accomplished.

The main story

SFTJ classes are more important now than ever.  Most families in our 7 communities have only intermittent electricity.  Few have Internet.  In some communities, there is no cell phone signal.  Only a handful of homes have televisions, and although the government has promised tablets to all students, they have not been received, and without electricity or Internet will not function IF they are given.
Since the Minister of Education mandated that school will be conducted virtually, our children will be left behind.
We at Strength for the Journey believe that a year without education is a serious loss.
Thus, SFTJ decided to hold classes in all our communities that are free from Covid-19.
YOU helped us gather the necessary resources- masks, backpacks, and school supplies. And last week, classes started.  We enrolled about 100 children with 2 other communities asking us to teach their children.
Safety protocols are followed including distancing, limiting class sizes to 10, disinfecting hands and all materials before and after class, and taking temperatures.
Sacrifices must be made, but as our children arrive from near and far, on foot and on burro, we know that what we are doing is important and our combined efforts are worthwhile.

Clothing Distribution

In September we took clothes from our donation center, El Centro de Compartir, to our farthest and poorest communities.  After setting up tables and piling the clothes, community members were invited to come and take what they needed.  This is one more way you help us to share with those less fortunate.

Food for the Poor

The poor have been especially affected by the pandemia.  Many are still without work.  They had little prior to the pandemic, and now they are desperate.  SFTJ identified those most affected and delivered packages of beans and rice to these families in several of our communities.
