The Need

Many children in the Dominican Republic struggle to thrive in a life of poverty. Inferior schools and illiterate parents compound the problem resulting in a generation of children with no hope for a better future. Strength for the Journey helps children build skills that create capabilities to change their future.

We offer classes that challenge thinking, promote problem-solving and provide hands-on enrichment. Strength for the Journey does not replace or replicate regular school. We go beyond the basic skills, working with school directors and teachers skills to create future community leaders.

Currently, Strength for the Journey DR is enriching the academic environment in the mountain area of Jamao al Norte, in the Dominican Republic. The Jamao al Norte Learning Center, located above the Parroquia Asunción De Maria Church, enrolls 130 children.  In addition, we travel each week to one room school houses in small villages throughout the mountain area educating another 130 children.

Strength for the Journey, DR gives financial assistance in support of the Jamao programs and classes and the small campo schools. Our relationships with the local Strength for the Journey board and advisory committee help us to best meet community needs.
